Clientele
In order to receive services from the Rehabilitation in Specialized Schools Program (RPSS) of Lethbridge-Layton-Mackay, children must be eligible for rehabilitation services at Lethbridge- Layton-Mackay and be admissible to either Mackay Centre School or Philip E. Layton School based on diagnosis and profile.
Elligible children and adolescents who meet criteria are between the ages of 4 to 17 years of age (or 18 to 21 years of age if still attending high school) with admissible physical impairments, such as a:
- Motor Impairment
- Speech and Language Impairment
- Visual Impairment
Location of services
Rehabilitation services provided to the children attending the two specialized schools are provided on-site, within the new EMSB school building, at 6333 rue de Terrebonne in NDG.
The RPSS staff offices, nursing stations, and therapy rooms are integrated into the new space. In addition, the clients of RPSS benefit from on-site satellite clinics such as Seating and Positioning (SAT-Motor), SAT-Com, and splinting clinics.
Please note that all other pediatric rehabilitation programs and specialized clinics of Lethbridge-Layton-Mackay remain on 3500 Decarie Boulevard and 7000 Sherbrooke Street West.
Children in the RPSS continue to benefit from clinics on the other sites as needed. Parents are responsible for transportation and attending the clinics, which include:
- Dysphagia Clinic
- Saliva Management Clinic
- Orthopedic Clinic
- Physiatry Clinic
- Upper Extremity Clinic
- Splinting Clinic
- Low Vision Clinic
Offer of service
This program is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Social Services and the Ministry of Education. Rehabilitation staff from the Lethbridge-Layton-Mackay work in close partnership with the education staff from the EMSB. The rehabilitation program focuses on rehabilitation goals, nursing support and supporting the children in their daily needs at school (feeding, dressing toileting), while the EMSB staff concern themselves with the educational needs of the children. Clients benefit from an Individualized Service Plan (ISP) for rehabilitation goals, as well as an Individualized Education plan for educational goals.
There are many joint efforts in accomplishing these goals. Therapist strategies and recommendations are used by educators, child care workers and PABs on a daily basis to maximize generalizability. This is the result of regular planning and case discussions between the parents, education and rehabilitation teams. In addition to this, there are specially designed programs such as language classes, augmentative communication classes and Phillip E Layton vision-adapted classrooms that are the direct result of the joint collaboration between rehabilitation specialists and education staff.
Children may also benefit from individualized services and group interventions. As per ministry guidelines, rehabilitation services are prioritized for children in pre-K to grade 2 level, after which monitoring and consultation services are offered in relation to functional goals.
The RPSS team of Lethbridge-Layton Mackay strives for rehabilitation success by increasing well-being, autonomy, integration and social participation of our youth at school, at home and in the community. Clients of the RPSS program will benefit from services such as:
- Assessment, interventions and consultation in the area of verbal, nonverbal and written communication, social interactions and the use of compensatory communication aids
- Assessment, interventions and consultation in the area of fine motor, feeding, dressing, toileting, and play
- Assessment, interventions and consultation in the area of gross motor development
- Assessment, interventions and consultation in the area of in the use of technical aids and adapted computer aids and software
- SAT-Motor clinics (assessment, adjustment and repairs)
- SAT-Com interventions (assessment, adjustment and repairs)
- Assessment and training in orientation and mobility
- Assessment of functional vision and visual skills training
- Social skills development and self-regulation strategies
- Psychosocial support for the child and his her family
- Parent workshops and support groups
- Adapted sports and leisure activities at school and facilitation of integration to community programs (Camp Massawippi, Défi sportif, horseback riding, etc)
- Consultation, transition and integration planning for children leaving the schools
